Resistance Bands.

At Osteopathic Works we help our patients towards optimum health by ensuring that our treatments don’t only reduce symptoms but educate patients on how best to rehabilitate and maintain strength and flexibility outside of the treatment room. The use of resistance bands is a perfect way to achieve these goals in a cost effective and adaptable way.

Resistance bands are available in multiple strength levels with different coloured bands having a different resistance. Therefore no matter what fitness level or strength you’re at, this kind of training will work for you. Your Osteopath can tailor a specific program for you depending on your injury or what you’re looking to get out of training.

Strength and Conditioning through resistance training can also be beneficial for core strength. Because there’s tension throughout the exercises, you have to stabilise your body. This helps with coordination, balance and it can also help you to involve more muscle groups.

Below are a few simple exercises demonstrated for common injuries that will benefit from this type of rehabilitation.

Shock you later Chronic Pain.

Shockwave therapy is a form of treatment that has been clinically proven to be very effective in the treatment of chronic, persistent pain conditions.

Most patients with chronic pain problems have been through various unsuccessful types of treatments. Up to 80% of the same patients worldwide report that Shockwave therapy has helped them eliminate their problem.

A hand-held probe is applied directly over the injured area which transmits high intensity acoustic waves through the skin to the underlying tissues.

Acoustic waves used in Shockwave therapy interact with tissue causing overall medical effects of accelerated tissue repair and cell growth, analgesia and mobility restoration. This is achieved by:

  • New blood vessel formation
  • Reduction of chronic inflammation
  • Dispersion of pain mediator “Substance P”
  • Stimulation of collagen, and
  • Dissolution of calcium build up

See Shockwave therapy demonstrated below

There may be a slight feeling of discomfort during the treatment, depending on the level of pain the patient is already experiencing in the area. However, since the treatment lasts only about five minutes, most patients are able to tolerate this discomfort. Additionally, the intensity of the treatment can be adjusted throughout the session.

Most indications require 3–5 treatments which are done 3–10 days apart, depending on the patient’s tolerance and their tissue response.

Common indications include:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Achilles Tendinopathy
  • Tennis/Golfer’s elbow
  • Gluteal tendinopathy
  • Trochanteric bursitis
  • Patella tendinopathy
  • Rotator cuff/shoulder disorders
  • Shin splints
  • Osgood-Schlatter/Severs Disease

It is recommended that patients refrain from physical activity, especially one that would involve the treated region, for about 48 hours following each treatment session.

If you think Shockwave Therapy may be helpful to you please phone the clinic today or speak to your Osteopath during your next consultation.

Spiky Balls.

Spiky balls are a great form of self-therapy in between Osteopathic treatments to alleviate trigger points or tightness in your muscles.

Common conditions that people use spiky balls to help manage their symptoms include:

Plantar Fasciitis

By rolling the ball under your foot to increase the circulation and reduced the tension in the plantar fascia patients have reported reduced pain with standing and applying load through the foot. This should be done multiple times throughout the day, especially at the beginning and end of the day.

Headaches

Headaches can commonly be caused by increased tension in neck muscles, particularly the suboccipital muscles that sit right at the base of your skull. These muscles can be hard to stretch so using the pressure of the spiky ball help to decrease the muscle tension, increase blood circulation and ultimately reduce the headache symptoms.

Rotator cuff injuries, glut tendonopathies and back pain

These conditions can also be managed at home using spiky ball therapy. As with the previous techniques shown, use the ball to relieve tension and release trigger points by massaging it into the area that is causing pain or reduced range of motion. Do not use the ball if you have an open wound, bruising or swelling.

Take a breath.

In a forever changing world, we’re constantly looking for that perfect form of exercise that fits into our crazy lives.  We want to live healthier, look better, eat more nutritiously and think more positively.

And consistency! Something that will suit our needs for longer than a two week trial.

Unlike the abundance of exercise fads that come and go, Yoga has been around for thousands of years. It cultivates health and wellbeing (physical, emotional, mental and social) through the regular practice of a range of many different techniques, including postures and movement, breath awareness and breathing exercises, relaxation and concentration, self-inquiry and meditation.*

A incredible benefit of yoga is that you can tailor your practice to suit how you are on that particular day. Whether you’re sore from other physical activity and need it for rehab, whether you’ve had the most stressful day at work and need to mend your mind or whether you want strengthen your muscles and improve you flexibility.

There is range of different types of yoga, some of the more popular practices are:

  • Hatha. The form most often associated with yoga, it combines a series of basic movements with breathing.
  • Vinyasa. A series of poses that flow smoothly into one another.
  • Power. A faster, higher-intensity practice that builds muscle.
  • Ashtanga. A series of poses, combined with a special breathing technique.
  • Bikram. Also known as “hot yoga,” it’s a series of 26 challenging poses performed in a room heated to a high temperature.
  • Iyengar. A type of yoga that uses props like blocks, straps, and chairs to help you move your body into the proper alignment.

Our Osteopath Rebecca recently did a 200 hour teacher training through Baptiste Yoga, a US based vinyasa/flow yoga founded by Baron Baptiste. She hopes to be able to use her experience and training to benefit her Osteopathic practice and educate patients further on the benefits of yoga and breathing.
